Abstract

473,090. Automatic firearms. SHEPHERD, R. V. June 18, 1936, No. 16935. [Class 119] Relates to automatic firearms of the kind in which the breechblock comprises an outer member 1 and an inner member 2 which are connected by a rocking lever 7 having arms of different length and adapted to impart relative movements to the two members during the initial opening and closing movements of the breech-mechanism. According to the invention, the two members are locked apart by a lever 13, pivoted to the member 1 and arranged to engage a shoulder 15 on the member 2, the lever being rocked to unlock the parts, when the breech-block nears the end of its return movement, by its engagement with a projection 19 on the breech casing. The members 1, 2, shown, are circular in section and the inner member carries the firing pin 3 and a cross-bar 4, the latter projecting through a slot 5 in the member 1 and carrying the cocking handle 6. The lever 7 is pivotally mounted in the member 1 and its long arm 8 engages in a slot 9 in the member 2. The short arm 10 is adapted to engage with a fixed projection 11 which effects the rocking of the lever as described above, the projection having a flat upper surface in order to ensure that the locking lever 13 will move into engagement with the shoulder 15 under the influence of the spring 17. The breech-block is provided with a return spring 16, and the outer member 1 has a slot or gap 23 adapted to receive the sear 24 of the trigger mechanism.
