Breech actions, sliding breech-block; breech actions, drop-down barrel; safety appliances. - Relates to safety devices adapted to be operated, when the gun is brought to the shoulder, partly from a spring-controlled heel-plate and partly from a spring-controlled grip-lever in the neck of the stock, and consists in so adapting the two controlling-members that, while each may be operated independently of the other, both must be actuated to unlock the firing-mechanism. In the form shown in Fig. 1 as applied to a Winchester pearifle, the bolt 15 is normally obstructed by a spring-pressed bell-crank lever 14. When the rifle is raised to the shoulder, the lever 14 is displaced out of the path of the bolt by a rod 4 adapted simultaneously to be lifted by a grip-lever 8 acting through a rod 7, and to be urged forwards by the shoulder-plate 1. The trigger is also held normally at safe by an extension 11 of the grip-lever 8. A modification is described in which the hammer of a Winchester repeater is held and released in similar fashion. In the form shown in Fig. 3 as applied to a double-barrel hammer gun, the triggers are normally held partly by the engagement with the projections 23 of a pivoted member 21 displaceable by the rod 4, and independently by the engagement with the triggers 13 of a plate 24, slidable by the grip-lever 8. The pivoted member 21 may be replaced by a slidable member. In the form shown in Fig. 8, the rod 4 is adapted to be raised by the grip-lever 8, and moved rearwardly by the plate 1 to bring about engagement of the claws 32, 33 and consequential retraction of the spring-pressed bar 34 out of engagement with the triggers 13.
