Abstract
610,284. Automatic firearms. PHIPPARD, S. R. April 4, 1946, No. 10490. Convention date, April 5, 1945. [Classes 92 (ii) and 119] A device is interposed between the trigger mechanism and the action of an automatic firearm for controlling the number of bursts when the trigger is pulled, the device being actuated directly by the action and being positively constrained from movement after each intermittent actuation by physical contact with the action. In the construction shown the breech bolt 7 has a recess 8 which provides a shoulder 9 for engaging faces a, b, c, d, on a rotatable control device 2. As shown, the bolt normally prevents rotation of the device 2 but when the recess 8 moves to a position above the device the latter is partially rotated by a -spring 20 and further rotated by the shoulder 9 as the bolt 7 recoils to bring the next face against the underside of the bolt. The trigger 15 is pivoted at 14 and carries a stepped connector 13 which actuates the sear 11, the latter being pivoted at 12 and carrying a spring 18a which bears on the undersurface of the connector and is connected to the trigger spring 17. When the trigger is pulled the sear is released from the bolt 7 and continuous fire takes place, the device 2 moving one step at each shot. When however a lateral projection 4 on one corner of the device 2 meets an extension 13b of the connector it depresses the latter and allows the sear to move upwards under the action of a spring 18. The connector may be moved laterally, whereby the mechanism may be arranged for single shots, continuous fire or in bursts as desired. The breech bolt recoils first against the action of a spring s and, near the end of its recoil, also against the action of a further spring HS.
