Abstract

Actuating pumps by fluid-pressure motors.-In a direct acting air compressor having oppositely-moving pistons 2, 3, which are not connected to a crank shaft or its equivalent, synchronous movement of the pistons is assured by rotary means. The pistons 2, 3 are formed with racks 10, 11 engaging pinions 12, 13 fixed on shafts 14, 15; the shafts are connected together through spur or bevel gearing. In a modification, the racks are formed with inclined teeth 41, 42, Fig. 4, which engage with worm wheels 43, 44 on a single shaft 45. The rack teeth are made of a size to fill the cylinder as far as possible. By modification of the connecting gear the pistons may move at different speeds. The compressor cylinders 8, 9 are of the same diameter as the. power cylinder. The liquid fuel pump is driven from shafts carrying connecting gear wheels. Air for the charge is supplied by a pump 30 through the reservoir 32.
