Abstract

Opening tops for motor vehicles of the type adapted to be raised from and lowered into a recess in the side of the body comprise a protecting part to which is hinged a side cover member adapted to be folded upon the protection part and collapsed therewith into the recess. The protection part may comprise a rear unit, consisting of a rear transverse part, and side portions to which are hinged foldable side members and which are adapted to be raised from and lowered into recesses in the body walls, in combination with a displaceable overhead cover. Fig. 1 shows, in a car convertible into a fourdoor saloon, the rear unit consisting of side and rear portions 4 adapted to be raised from and lowered into body recesses 1, and to the rear unit are hinged frames 6 which may have hinged thereto window frames 6<a> the hinges of which are in alignment with the door hinges. A transverse screen 7 is adapted to be raised from a recess 8 and has hinged thereto a front frame 9 similar to the frame 6. Two flexible covers 12 are adapted to be drawn from spring-controlled rollers 12a mounted on the rear portion 4 and transverse screen 7 respectively and secured as shown, intermediate bows 13 being provided if desired. The rear unit and hinged frame and the transverse screen 7 with its hinged frame 9 may be adapted to be raised by mechanical means such as a shaft 18 with drums 17, 17a, 17b and appropriate cables. The unit and transverse screen may be supported in elevated position by toggle levers which are caused to break joint by a lever 24<e>.
