Softening ; calendering. - In a, fabricbreaking machine of the kind described and claimed in Specification 7074/08, a pair of breaking-members having annular, axial, or helical interengaging projections and grooves is employed in addition to the pairs of scrolls 1, Fig. 1. The breaking-rollers 21, 9, Fig. 2, preferably geared together, are mounted on arms 14 and in fixed bearings respectively, the arms preferably being operated synchronously with the arms 4 carrying the outer scroll members 2, or they may be adjustably mounted on fixed arms. The shaft 19 carrying the roller 21, which may be composed of independently adjustable parts as shown, is mounted in bearing blocks 15 independently adjustable in the forked ends of the arms 14. The bearings of the shaft 19 are preferably of the selfaligning kind so that the shaft may be arranged at an angle to the shaft carrying the roller 9. In a modification, the shaft 19 is adjusted by eccentric bushes. The shafts of the rollers 9, 21 may be geared together, the roller 9 being rotated by the gearing driving the pairs of scrolls 1. The fabric entering the machine passes over and under the breaking-rollers in the same manner in which it passes over the scrolls 1, or it may simply pass between the breaking-rollers before being treated by the scrolls.
