491,864. Finishing fabrics; drying fabrics; hollow rollers. BROOKES, N. E. (Cluett, Peabody, & Co., Inc.) March 10, 1937, No. 7059. [Class 42 (i)] [Also n Group XIII] Calendering; breaking or softening ; shrinking ; drying fabrics ; hollow rollers.-A fabric W to be dried and polished and the starch &c. therein broken up is passed alternately round drums 11, 12 arranged in two sets, the fabric being pressed against each drum at the entering side by a roller 13 or 14 round which and the drums 11, 12 pass endless bands 15, 16 for feeding the fabric. The drums 11, 12 are hollow as shown in Fig. 5, and rotate on hollow bearings 55, 56 which convey steam &c. to and from a stationary chamber 60 fitting closely within the shell of the roller 12. The rollers 13, 14 are driven by belt and bevel gearing from the main shaft 80 as also are some of the drums 11, 12 but these may be driven at a much higher speed than the rollers 13, 14 and belts 15, 16 to polish the fabric. The fabric may be shrunk at the nip between the first roller 13 and drum 11, Fig. 7, and previously between this point and rollers 108, 109, Fig. 4, it may be moistened and stretched longitudinally according to the setting of the variable speed gears VS, VS<1>.
