[Class 60] Apparatus for polishing the rolls 1 of a rolling-mill 2 comprises two polishing-rollers 21, one for each mill roll 1, driven, and at the same time having their surfaces kept free of material removed from the rolls 1, by fluted rollers 13, additional cleaning rollers 15 also being provided. The rollers are carried by shafts 3 movable axially parallel to the rolls 1 in bearings 4 in frames 5, and each shaft has removably secured thereto, by a screw and a locking screw, a bracket 8 support ing gearing 17, 19 driving the roller 13 and driven by a shaft 6 mounted eccentrically in the shaft 3 ; the polishing roller 21 is carried by a frame 23 engaging the sides 25 of the bracket 8. The shafts 3 are moved axially to carry the rollers 21 along the rolls 1 by a screw 28 engaging a nut-sleeve 27 mounted in a frame 26 with which the shafts 3 are engaged the screw 28 being driven in opposite directions by a reversible electric motor 34 actuated by limit switches and a switch actuator on the frame 26. The shafts 6 are driven by belts or chains 45, with tensioning-devices 46, 47 actuated by a spring 49, from pulleys or sprockets 43, 44 carried by the frame 26 and driven, through gearing 40, &c. from a second electric motor. The rollers 21 are pressed against the rolls 1 by arms 54, 55 on the ends of the shafts 3, the arms at each end being normally urged towards each other by a spring 60 The frame 26 may be moved laterally to disengage the bearings of the various shafts &c. supported by the frame.
