[Class 83 (iv).] In a machine for straightening metal sheets comprising two trains of staggered rolls through which the sheet is passed, small lateral spacing and supporting rolls are inserted between pairs of sheet-engaging rolls and co-operate with large backing rolls so as to reinforce the sheetengaging rolls against outward and lateral bowing. Small straightening rolls may thus be utilized. Upper pairs of straightening rolls a .. f and corresponding pairs of lower rolls, are mounted respectively on movable and stationary end frames 2, 1, small rolls D, which do not contact with the work being arranged between the pairs of rolls with their inner surfaces nearer the work than the axes of the straightening rolls. These rolls are subjected only to compression forces and prevent horizontal bowling of the straightening rolls. End rolls E are also provided for a similar purpose. Vertical bowing is prevented by large backing rolls A, B. The upper frame is adjustable by screws 3 operated by worm gear 30 through hand wheels 33 to adjust the upper rolls as a unit. Each roll may be independently adjusted. For this purpose the rolls are provided with roller bearings 40 mounted on journals 39 in blocks 34, which are adjustable in slots in the frames by wedges 36 connected to the blocks by screws 37 and nuts 38. The straightening rolls are driven by an electric motor through a gear-box and universal joints.
