Abstract

Stop-gear.-An emergency valve of the kind described in the parent Specification in which the valve is retained open by fluid pressure after being opened by hand but after automatically closing can only be re-opened by hand, is retained in the open position by a leaky piston having a valvelike sealing-surface adapted to make the piston fluid tight at one end of its movement. The valve spindle I has a threaded part 1<1> adapted to engage a nut formed in a sleeve 2 connected to the piston 3 and slidably but non-rotatably mounted in a boss 5 supported by a web 6 from the casing 7. A bevel wheel 11 is mounted on the spindle 1<1> and engages a corresponding wheel 12 adapted to be rotated by a hand wheel 14 for opening the valve. The piston fits loosely in a cylinder 4 supplied with pressure fluid through a port 8 and has a sealing-surface 9 adapted to engage a seat on the casing. To open the valve the hand wheel is first rotated in one direction to cause the surface to engage its seat and then in the other direction to move the main valve off its seat.
