Abstract

431,438. Valves. PEEL, D. P., 21, Warwick Road, South Shields. Oct. 8, 1934, No. 28777. [Class 135] A screw - down feedwater valve for boilers is provided with means whereby it may be operated even if the spindle 17 breaks. Normally the spindle 17 is operated by the screwed handwheel 25 mounted by a flanged bush 23 in the fixed cross - head 7, the spindle being prevented from rotating by a key 13 on the valve - member 11 engaging slots 15 in a cylinder 9. The interior of the casing 1 is connected to the feed-water pump and the outlet 2 to the boiler. Normally the auxiliary valve 41 is screwed on to its upper seating, so that the pump pressure is applied through passages 47, 48 to the rear of the valve 11. If the spindle breaks, the valve 11 is closed by holding the handle 29 and operating the wheel 25, and the auxiliary valve 41 is screwed down to the position shown, thus opening the rear face of the valve 11 to atmosphere through the passages 48, 51. When the upper part of the spindle is again raised, the valve 11 opens. Owing to the pressure below it and the absence of pressure above it, and the valve then remains open, even during the pressure stroke of the pump. In the open position, a seating 35 on the back of the valve 11 engages a seating 37 on the valve casing.
