Abstract

541,547. Valves. SELF-CHANGING GEAR CO., Ltd., and MILLER, A. A. Feb. 28, 1940, No. 3720. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIV ] A quick-release valve for brake cylinders &c. of fluidpressure-operated brakes &c. is first partly opened by reduction of pressure on one side in order to exhaust the piping and space on the reduced pressure side of the valve after which the valve becomes fully opened to exhaust the brake cylinder. As shown for venting a brake cylinder a, the valve d contains a stepped piston o with central and side passages p, q and which has at its lower end a valve x closing an exhaust passage V<SP>1</SP> of the piston casing n. Fluid pressure is supplied to the brake cylinder by controller e, the fluid passing through the passages q. Upon connection by the controller to an exhaust passage l of the supply conduit c between the valve and the controller, the reduction of pressure results in the lifting of piston o sufficiently to connect the space and the conduit above the piston through the passage q to the exhaust passage v<SP>1</SP>; following this, the pressure below the piston causes its further lifting and this connects to the exhaust passage v<SP>1</SP>, the brake cylinder a and its connected piping by reason of the opening of the part of the casing n previously closed by the lower part u of the stepped piston.
