Abstract
155,429. Haddan, R., (Regan, J. B.). Nov. 7, 1919. Fluid-pressure.-An electrically-controlled device for applying pneumatic brakes so arranged that the brake cannot be taken off unless the current is flowing, comprises three superposed chambers 39, 17, 19. The chamber 39 communicates with the atmosphere through a vent plug 43, and with the train pipe by a pipe 42 the opening of which is controlled by a valve 38. The chamber 17 is open to the reservoir; and the chamber 19 is connected to the engineer's valve. The chambers 17, 19 communicate by an opening controlled by a valve 29 on the same stem as the valve 38, and the two valves are operated by pneumatic pressure acting on differential pistons 28, 26. The piston 28 is exposed to the pressure in the chamber 19, while the piston 26 works in a cylinder 21 connected by a duct 25 to a passage 9 the two ends of which open into the chamber 17 and a chamber 24 connected to the atmosphere respectively. At the ends of the passage 9 are valves 10, 11 mounted on a single stem and operated by an electro-magnet 7. When the magnet 7 is excited, the valve 10 is closed and the valve 11 opened so that the valve 29 is held open and the valve 38 closed, as shown. When the magnet 7 is de-energized, the cylinder 21 is vented through the valve 10, whereon the valve 38 opens, venting the train pipe, and the valve 29 closes, cutting off the reservoir from the engineer's valve.
