Abstract

232,883. Smothers, R. J. Dec. 5, 1924. Blankets and inapression surfaces. - A flexible impression plate or blanket for the blanket roll of a printing press is provided with bevelled end edges which are held in overlapping engagement on the roll in order to give a continuous cylindrical surface. The hollow roll comprises a fixed section 6 with circular end plates and a movable section 11 pivoted on a shaft 14 mounted on the end plates. The meeting edges 7, 12 of the sections are bevelled. The flexible plate 22, which is adapted to form a complete cylinder and has bevelled meeting edges 24, 25, is secured at its ends, as by brazing, to members 20, 21 adapted respectively to be secured to the pivoted section 11 and the opposed end of the section 6. The meeting portions of the members 20, 21 are bevelled. In use the members 20, 21 carrying the plate 22 are secured to the roll sections and the section 11 is moved to complete the cylinder, in which position it is locked bv cams 39, on a shaft 35 rotatably mounted in the end plates, engaging an inclined surface 17 on the section 11. The shaft 35 is locked in adjusted position by keepers in the form of screwed pins engaging notches on discs on the ends of the shaft and by screws passing through the end plates and engaging sockets in the section 11.
