Platen machines; embossing.-A printing, embossing, or like press, comprising a lower ramplate supporting guides for a movable upper ramplate and bearings for a cam shaft which is rotated to effect movement of the upper ram-plate, is provided with an adjustable stop-plate to limit the downward movement of the upper ram-plate. The guides for the upper ram-plate d, Fig. 2, consist of standards e of rectangular section secured at each end of a base-plate a, and the upper ram-plate is provided at its ends with projecting arms f forming rectangular grooves to engage the standards e. Strap plates o attached across the outer ends of the arms f engage the outer faces of the standards. The shaft g, supported between bearings at the upper ends of the standards e, is provided with a central operating handle h, and has cams i formed upon it between the handle and the bearings to engage surfaces j on the upper ram-plate, when the handle is depressed. The upper ram-plate is raised by restoring the handle to the vertical position, plates k secured to the ends of the cam shaft being provided with cam slots l, Fig. 1, engaging rollers on studs n attached to the strap plates o on the ends of the upper ram-plate. The width and contour of the slots l is preferably such that the weight of the ram-plate is allowed to assist in its descent. The stop plates p are provided with inclined upper edges and are adapted to abut against the lower edges of the strap plates o which are correspondingly shaped. The stop plates p are held against the standards e by bolts q passing through slots r provided in the plates, so that after slackening the bolts and plates can be adjusted longitudinally by means of screws s which are screwed into the standards e and have flanges t to engage within grooves in the stop plate. Graduations may be provided on the screws s or plates p to facilitate adjustment. The surface b of the base-plate a is adapted to support a slidable forme c or a printing-bed plate or the like.
