SAFETY DEVICE FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
Application filed September 26, 1914.
To all whom it may concern: C
Be it known that I, Gnonon A. EDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clevelanchin the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Safety Devices for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a safety device for use in connection with printing presses of the type wherein there is a movable platen, upon which platen the sheet to be printed is placed by hand.
The device of this invention operates in connection with a movable platen, so that when the movable platen is in its open position to receive a sheet to be printed, the safety device is moved away from the movable platen and in such position as in no way to interfere with the placing of the sheet to be printed upon the'platen, but when the platen moves to the position in which the sheet is printed, the guard is projected into a position adjacent and above the upper edge of the movable platen, so that if the hand of the operator is not withdrawn from the face of the movable platen the guard will contact with the hand of the operator pushing the hand upward and away from the face of the movable platen so that it will be impossible, without intention upon the part of the operator, for his hand to remain upon the face of the movable platen when the same moves into print ing position.
Generally speaking, the invention comprises elements and combinations thereof set forth in the accompanying claims.
Reference should be had to the accom-' panying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a movable platen of a printing press having a movable platen and the device of my invention attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective elevation of a printing press showing my invention attached thereto; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of a printing press with the device of my invention attached thereto.
At 1 there is indicated the fixed bed of a printing press which carries the type set up of the matter to be printed, and at 2 is indicated the inking plate which is common in printing press construction. At 3 there Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1918.
Serial No. 863,611.
is indicated a movable platen. This platen is mounted upon a base 4., which by means of bolts or other means is secured to a support 5. This support 5 is journaled in suitable standards 6, and to the part 5 at a portion which extends beyond the upright 6 there is secured a crank 7. The crank is provided with a roller 8 which engages in the cam groove 9 of a gear wheel 10, this gear wheel being operated in any suitable manner.
Rotation of the gear 10 will turn the crank 7 which will cause the movable platen 3 to move in a position parallel with and against the bed 1 and at the reverse end of its movement to lie in what 1 term position such as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, which is approximately horizontal, in which position the operator places the sheet of paper on the platen 3, which sheet is to be subsequently printed.
All the construction thus described is well known in the printing art, and is usual construction'of a well known type of press.
For purposes of disclosure, in the drawings and in my description I have shown and will describe the application of my device to a machine of the kind described.
Upon thefixed standards 6 which receive the journals of the member 5, I bolt a pair of supports represented at 11. To these supports there is pivotally secured the opposite ends of a frame 12. Cooperating withaportion of the frame 12 is a sleeve 13, which is free to turn upon the frame 12. From this sleeve there extends a rod 14. The rod is mounted to have an articulatedconnection which in the present instance is a sliding connection with a portion of the movable platen 3. As shown, the base 4 which supports the platen 3 is provided with an opening through which extends the rod 14.
As the platen 3 moves to its open position, or that position in which the operator feeds a sheet thereto, the frame 12 will be moved so that the upper part is carried beneath and away from the platen, thus leaving the platen unobstructed and the operator unhampered in placing a sheet to be printed upon the platen. As the platen moves to its closed position, or that position in which the sheet thereon is moved to printing position, the upper portion of the frame is moved adjacent to and above the upper edge of the platen 3.
If in placing a sheet upon the platen 3, the hand of the operator is not withdrawn by the operators own volition from the face of the platen, the frame 12 will engage the hand of the operator and push his hand from in front of the platen 3 and so prevent any accidental squeezing of the hand of-the operator between the movable platen 3 and the stationary bed 1.
The frame 12 may carry a netting 0r similar means, as indicated at 15, which will prevent the hand of the operator from being thrust beneath the top bar of the frame 12.
The particular mounting of my guard device upon the press shown is but illustrative of the manner in which my device may be utilized, and various changes may be made in the details of the mounting of the safety device without departing from the spirit of my invention. I do not limit myself to the mounting of the supports 11 upon the particular portion of the printing press shown. They may be mounted in any convenient place upon the machine which will produce the resultant cooperation and co-action between the movable platen and the frame 12 which has previously been described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is i l. The combination with a movable platen of a printing press, of a guard comprising a frame said frame being pivotally mounted uponv a non-moving part of the press, a 7
ing member which is parallel with the top of the platen, the ends of the side members being pivotally mounted upon a non-moving part of the press, a guide upon the platen, a member slidable in such guide, said last mentioned member being pivotally connected to the frame.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature in the presence. of two witnesses.
I GEORGE A. EDDY. Witnesses A. J. I-IUDsoN, L. I. PORTER.
