Algonac, Mich. Filed duly 26, 1962, Ser. No.'212,578 Claims. (Cl. 101-6) This invention relates to a novel and useful apparatus I for impressing type face.
In the printing industry there has been in recent years 'the main user of printed material of 'this type and the appearance and appeal of an ad can be greatly improved by the use of portions of the printed ad which stand out from the remainder thereof.
While different portions of an ad may be printed with diiferent size or design of type face, the general public is accustomed to seeing these older methods of attracting attention to ads and accordingly there has been a relatively recent move toward using boldfaced type having a design incorporated therein.
Heretofore printed material having boldfaced letters therein on which a design is formed was produced by first printing the ad with conventional boldfaced type and then making a photograph of the printed material with a grid or mat having a given design disposed over certain portions of the material which was to have a design formed thereon, Then, the photograph, having the designed boldfaced type thereon, could be reproduced on an engraving plate in order that the desired ad could be printed including broad faced lettered portions thereof having designs thereon. This method of reproducing broad faced printing material having a design thereon is of course very time consuming and costly. In addition, such methods may not be practiced in other than large metropolitan areas where photoengraving facilities are available.
It is accordingly the main object of this invention to provide an apparatus for impressing the broad faced type slugs themselves which are to be used in printing advertising and other literature which is to include broad faced type having a design formed thereon.
A further object of this invention, in accordance with the immediately precedingobject, is to provide an apparatus which will be capable of simultaneously forming a plurality of separate designs on the transfer face of a plurality of type slugs.
Yet another object of this invention, in accordance with the immediately preceding objects, is to provide an apparatus which will conform to conventional'forms of manufacture, be of simple construction and easy to use so as to provide a device that will be economically feasible, long lasting and relatively trouble free in operation.
These together with other objects and advantages which taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 3-3 of FIGURE 2;

A bed plate generally referred to by the reference numeral 16 is secured to the base 12 in any convenient manner and has a plurality of upwardlyvopening slots 18 formed therein whichv extend longitudinally of the bed plate 16 and open through the opposite ends thereof. In addition, the sides 20 of the bed plate 16 have a pair of oppositely opening slots or grooves 22 formed therein.
A pair of buttresses 24 are removably secured to each end of the base 12 by means of fasteners 26 and an abutment plate 28 is removably secured between each pairof buttresses 24 and the corresponding end of the bed plate 16. 1 I
An embossing roller carriage generally'referred to by the reference numeral 30 is provided and is generally U- shaped in configuration including a pair of depending legs 32 interconnected at their upper ends by means of a bight portion 33. Each of the legs 32 is provided with winturned flange 34 on its lower end which is snugly and slidably receivedin the corresponding slots 22. In this manner, the roller carriage 30 is guidingly supported from the bed plate 16 for reciprocal movement longitudinally of the bed plate 16. The legs 32 each have a slot 36 formed therein and the opposite ends of a support shaft 38 project through and are rotatably and slidably received in the slots 36. Each endof the support shaft 38 which projects outwardly of the roller carriage 30 has .a gear wheel 46 mounted thereon and a pair of rack gears 42 are secured to the base 12 in any convenient manner such as by means of fasteners 44. The gear wheels 40 are aligned and meshed with the rack gears 42 and a crank handle 46 is fixedly secured to one end of the support shaft 38.-
A pair of journal blocks 48 each include a shank portion 50 which is slidably received through a corresponding slot 52 formed in the bight portion 33 and the shank portion 50 of each journal block 48 is secured to an apertured mounting plate 54 by means of a suitable fastener 56. The mounting plates 54 areeach supported from the bight portion 33 by means of a plurality of standard studs 58 having adjusting nuts 60 threadedly engaged therewith and compressively engaging portions of the mounting plates 54 therebetween. In addition, a pair of abutment studs 62 are thre'adedly engaged through complementary .threaded bores '64 formed in the bight portion 33 and held in adjusted position by meansof'jam nuts 66. A journal block 68 is rotatably supported from the lower end of each of the abutment studs 62 and rotatably journals the shaft 38'." 'ItjiS to be understood that the journal blocks 48 each also rotatably journal the shaft 38 Disposed between adjacent ones of the journal blocks 48 and 68 are a plurality of embossing rollers 70 which each has an individual design formed in its outer surface. The embossing rollers 70 may of course be raised and lowered relative to the upper surface 72 of the bed plate 16 upon the raising and-lowering of the shaft 38.
It is to be understood that the shaft 38 will be adjusted only slightly relatively to the bed plate 16 and therefore that the gear wheels 40 will remain in proper meshed engagement with the rack gears 42. However, if it isde- Y merit studs 78' similar to abutment'studs 62.

With attention now directed to FIGURES-1' and '4 of the'drawings it will'be seen asecond rollercarriage generally referred to by the reference numeral 74 which, is substantially identical to the roller carriage 3t) with the exception that it is provided with journal blocks 76 similar to journal blocks 68 that are each supported fromabut formed on the embossing rollers70.
With attention now directed toFIGURE S'of thedrawings it may be seen that a plurality of type slugs 82 are 7 received withinthe slots or grooves 18 and that the'laterings it may be seen thatthe roller carriage 30 isprovided of the upwardly opening and longitudinally extending slots formed therein adapted to receive an elongated type slug with the transfer face thereof disposed uppermost and jabovethe portions ofthe bed plate defining the upper extremities of said slots, said bed plate including a pair of longitudinally extending opposite sides and means defining a pair of longitudinal slots therein opening outwardly away from said bed plate, said sides, above said slots, be-

In this manner, type slugs to be embossed by the rollers 80 may be placed in the ends of'the grooves '18 at theleft side of FIGURE 1. The type slugs to be impressed by the rollers 70 are then placed in the other ends of the slots or grooves 18. During movement of the carriages 30 and 74 to the left, the embossing rollers ,801will impress the type slugs disposed in the adjacent ends of the slots 18. Then the carriages 30 and 74 may be moved toward the far end of thebed plate 16 whereupon the distant type slugs will be embossed'by thejembossing roll-i ers 70. Prior to the'return of the carriages 30 and 74 to the adjacent end of the bed plate 16, the type slugs82 em- 'bossed by the rollers 80 may be removed and substituted for by newslugs which are to be embossed. j The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur -to those skilled inthe art, it is notdesired to limit the invention to, the exact construction'and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed. a a

The combination of claim 1 including a second carriage guidinglyt mounted on said bed plate for guided rectilinear movement longitudinally thereof and including" at least one embossing roller journaled for rotation about an axisextending transversely of said bed plate andadjustable toward and .away from said bed plate, means rigidly and removably interconnecting said carriages for simul- 'taneous and equal reciprocation.

Claims (1)

1. AN APPARATUS FOR IMPRESSING THE TRANSVERSE BASE OF TYPE SLUGS WITH A PREDETERMINED DESIGN, SAID APPARATUS COMPRISING AN ELONGATED BASE ADAPTED TO BE SECURED TO A SUPPORTING SURFACE, SAID BASE INCLUDING A BED PLATE EXTENDING LONGITUDINALLY THEREOF AND HAVING A PLURALITY OF UPWARDLY OPENING AND LONGITUDINALLY EXTENDING SLOTS FORMED THEREIN ADAPTED TO RECEIVE AN ELONGATED TYPE SLUG WITH THE TRANSFER FACE THEREOF DISPOSED UPPERMOST AND ABOVE THE PORTIONS OF THE BED PLATE DEFINING THE UPPER EXTREMITIES OF SAID SLOTS, SAID BED PLATE INCLUDING A PAIR OF LONGITUDINALLY EXTENDING OPPOSITE SIDES AND MEANS DEFINING A PAIR OF LONGITUDINAL SLOTS THEREIN OPENING OUTWARDLY AWAY FROM SAID BED PLATE, SAID SIDES, ABOVE SAID SLOTS, BEING PARALLEL AND PLANAR, A GENERALLY INVERTED U-SHAPED CARRIAGE INCLUDING A PAIR OF DEPENDING PLATE-LIKE LEGS INTERCONNECTED AT THEIR UPPER ENDS BY MEANS OF A PLATE-LIKE BIGHT PORTION EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY OF SAID BED PLATE AND DISPOSED A SPACED DISTANCE ABOVE THE FIRST-MENTIONED SLOTS, THE LOWER ENDS OF SAID LEGS INCLUDING INWARDLY DIRECTED FLANGES SNUGLY AND SLIDABLY RECEIVED IN THE OPPOSITE SIDE SLOTS, THE LOWER ENDS OF SAID LEGS, IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT SAID FLANGES, SLIDINGLY ENGAGING SAID SIDES ABOVE SAID OPPOSITE SIDE SLOTS, EACH OF SAID LEGS DEFINING AN UPSTANDING SLOT DISPOSED ABOVE THE CORRESPONDING FLANGE, A SUPPORT SHAFT, THE OPPOSITE ENDS OF SAID SUPPORT SHAFT BEING SNUGLY, SLIDABLY AND ROTATABLY RECEIVED IN THE LAST-MENTIONED SLOTS, A PLURALITY OF EMBOSSING ROLLERS JOURNALLED ON SAID SHAFT AND SPACED LONGITUDINALLY OF THE LATTER IN REGISTRY WITH CERTAIN OF THE FIRST-MENTIONED SLOTS, INDIVIDUAL JOURNAL MEANS ON SAID SHAFT BETWEEN EACH PAIR OF ADJACENT ROLLERS AND DISPOSED BETWEEN SAID BED PLATE AND SAID BIGHT PORTION, MEANS MOUNTING EACH OF SAID JOURNAL MEANS FROM SAID BIGHT PORTION FOR INDIVIDUAL POSITIVE ADJUSTMENT TOWARD SAID BED PLATE, JOURNAL MEANS ON SAID SHAFT BETWEEN EACH OF SAID LEGS AND THE ADJACENT ROLLER, AND INDIVIDUAL ADJUSTMENT MEANS CONNECTED BETWEEN SAID BIGHT PORTION AND SAID LASTMENTIONED JOURNAL MEANS OPERABLE TO ADJUSTABLY VARY THE MAXIMUM SPACING BETWEEN SAID BED PLATE AND SAID LASTMENTIONED JOURNAL MEANS.
