Abstract
225,325. Stoddart, J. Oct. 4, 1923. Lantern fronts.-In a front glass for a motor-car or like lamp of the type comprising refracting and non-refracting portions, the refracting portion or portions directing the light downwardly, the vertical crosssection of the refracting or each of the refracting portions correspond substantially to one half of a symmetrical lens selected from one side of the axis of the lens and two or more non-refracting portions are provided. In one form, a lens is cut from part of a larger lens between its axis and periphery, one or both surfaces of which is concave or convex, or one concave and one convex, and one or more parts 3, Fig. 4, of the surfaces may be grooved or moulded flat so as to transmit light without appreciable refraction. In a modification, a framework for attachment to existing lamps consists of a number of these lenses with spaces through which light can pass without refraction. In a second modification, the front glass is moulded with alternate portions 5, 6 refracting and non-refracting, as shown in Fig. 8. A screen of horizontal slots may be interposed between the light source and the front glass.
