Abstract
512,955. Vehicle lamp fronts and reflectors. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 23, 1938, No. 8918. Convention date, March 23, 1937. [Classes 39 (ii) and 75 (ii)] A lens for producing a country driving beam when used in a vehicle headlight such as described in Specification 479,258 comprises top and bottom sections 22, 23 extending horizontally entirely across the lens and having vertically extending elements of narrow light spread, upper and lower intermediate sections 25, 26 having vertically extending elements of wide light spread, and a horizontally disposed centre section 24 having vertically extending elements adjacent the vertical centre line of the lens of wide light spread and other vertically extending elements at the sides of the lens of narrow light spread, the degree of spread of the vertically extending elements included in each section substantially decreasing from the vertical centre line of the lens outwardly. The headlight may be fitted together with headlights having lenses such as described in Specifications 512,956 and 512,988 for producing a country meeting beam and a city driving beam in a single holder. The lens in the construction shown comprises areas A consisting of a number of flutes having 6 degrees spread, areas B each consisting of a single flute of 8 degrees spread, areas C 4 degrees spread, areas D consisting of a number of flutes of 32 degrees spread, areas E each consisting- of two flutes of 12 degrees spread, areas F consisting of a number of flutes of 18 degrees spread, areas G consisting of a number of flutes of 18 degrees spread, areas H consisting of pairs of flutes of 18 degrees spread, areas J consisting of single flutes of 6 degrees spread, areas K consisting of single flutes of 10 degrees spread, and area L consisting of a number of flutes of 32 degrees spread. The areas H, J, K, L are also formed on their rear surfaces with prisms bending downwardly the light passing therethrough of 3 degrees, 3 degrees, 4 degrees, and graded from 3 degrees at the top to 10 degrees at the bottom, respectively. The reflector axis is aimed about half a degree below the horizontal. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the light directing effect may be derived from a configurated reflector instead of a lens. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
