Abstract

225,106. Babcock & Wilcox, Ltd., (Lulofs, W.). March 24, 1924. Pulverulent-fuel furnaces; cooling; stoking.-A furnace for powdered fuel is provided with a large number of upright or upwardly directed burners arranged in the lower part of the combustion chamber so that a short broad flame is obtained; also provision is made for cooling the burners. Fig. 2 shows one arrangement of a boiler furnace in which powdered fuel is blown through tubes 12, 13 and enters the furnace through burners 14 fitting into burner bodies 15, 16. The parts 15, 16 also fit around tubes 4 supplied with water from the boiler to cool the burners. Other cooling tubes 5 are provided in the lower part of the combustion chamber 2. As shown in Fig. 3, the burners are constituted by openings between the links of a wide endless chain 17 supported by rollers 18, 19, one or both of which is driven. The upper flight of the chain is also supported by rollers 21. Powdered coal supplied to chambers 25 passes through openings in the walls 24 into chambers 22 and is then blown vertically through the chain into the combustion chamber. To prevent lateral escape of fuel and air, air is also blown into end spaces formed by walls 27, 28, 29, and passes through the parts of the chain above the spaces. Detachable bottoms 31 are provided in the chambers 25. The upper flight of the chain may rest on cooling tubes and water supplied-cooling tubes may also be provided above this part of the chain. The chain can also be cooled directly by sprinkling water on it or passing its lower part through a water tank.
