Description

APPARATUS FOR THE COMBUSTION 0E I OlSQ-QNOUS GASES IN BLAST FU'RNACES.v FILED JULY 1,192.1.
Patented Mar. 6, 1923.
Unire stares httltl sereni ortica.,
JOHANN VOEGELI, 0F ZURICH, SNI'LZERLAND.
Application filed July 7,
To all l1li/wm t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANN Vessem, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, and resident of Zurich, in the Canton of Zurich,
Switzerland, have invented certain new and 1,371,827 according to which the poisonous gases in blast-furnaces and furnaces of mines, produced by the ores, are caused to be combusted and thus rendered harmless. The object of the present invention is to provide a modified and improved construction of apparatus which will be hereinafter more clearly described and shown by reference to the accompanying drawings. ln these drawings:
Fig. l is a vertical section through the top of a blast-furnace with the apparatus applied, and
Fig. 2 shows a section through line AHB in Fig. 1.
According to this improved construction the poisonous gases rising in the blastfur nace are caused to be combusted by means of acetylene burners. The acetylene together with hydrogen is forced under pressure into two pipes l and 2 respectively, the said pipes lying in one and the same plane and embracing the blast-furnace 3 and being secured thereto by any convenient device. The outer pipe 2 receives the hydrogen and the inner pipe 1 conducts the acetylene, and both pipes are made to communicate with a double row of burners 4; of which the nozzles 5 project through the briclrwork of the blast-furnace into the interior thereof. The
disposition is thereby su-ch that the hydrogen flowing through the outer pipe into the witnesses.
1921. serial no. 482,987.
burners carries the acetylene with it7 at the same time flowing from the inner pipe to the burners and thence to the interior ofthe furnace. The ignited mixture issuing from the several oppositely arranged nozzles 5 causes an intense flame which at once combusts all the poisonous gases rising up in the blast-furnace and consequently renders them harmless. l
It will be easily understood that, instead of acetylene, benzene may also be used and applied in a manner similar to that described.
And in order to facilitate the mounting and dismounting or repairs of the apparatus described, I arrange a light gallery or platform 6 at a suitable distance below the pipes, tne said platform being secured to the structure 3 by means of stays 7 or other suitable means. i
Having now fully described my said invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In the herein-described apparatus for the combustion of poisonous gases in blast-furnaces, the combination with two pipes mounted horizontally and near the top of the blast-furnace andembracing the and serving to receive and conduct hydrogen and acetylene respectively, of a double row of acetylene burners connected to the said pipes and communicating` therewith, the nozzles of said burners projecting into the interior of the blast-furnace and beingin pairs and oppositely disposed in relation to each other, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Iny testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing JOH. VOEGELI.
Witnesses C. W. MILLER, F. HEIM.
