Abstract

223,747. Johnston, W. A. April 30, 1923. Pressure-reducing valves particularly for use with high pressures and temperatures. A valve member is operated by a spindle having semirotary movement, connected by a pin and slotted arm to a small diameter power plunger loaded by a spring or weighted lever, the spring and plunger being supported on a common bracket secured to the casing. The valve comprises a tapered plug f having a balancing port f<2> and ports 1 adapted to work in a liner f<1> having ports 2 of different geometrical shape and provided with a slot to co-operate with a stop pin on the plug. The valve spindle g passes through a packing gland n<1> containing a number of thin diaphragms adapted to deflect under pressure and at its outer end bears against an adjustable pivot q or ground ball to take up the unbalanced pressure on the valve spindle. The actuating plunger C subject to outlet pressure admitted through a pipe c2 and stop valve t is packed by a series of packing collars c<3> and coupled by a spindle c<4> to an abutment j<1> adjustably loaded by a spring d. The abtuments of the spring are formed to engage a rib k<1> on the bracket k to prevent rotation. The spindle c<4> has a pin engaging a slotted arm h fixed to the valve spindle whereby the latter is oscillated. The spring may be replaced by a weighted lever linked to a second lever acting on the end of the spindle c<4>. The plug-cock may be replaced by a series of ported oscillating disc valves moving between fixed ported members. The inlet may be arranged at the middle of the series. In another modification the valve is constructed as a double beat needle valve. The pressure parts of the device are constructed from forged or alloy steel or machined from nickel steel or other high tensile alloy.
