Abstract

222,308. Leech, S. Sept. 20, 1923. Street lamps; mounting electric lamps in lanterns.-A street lamp comprises a part spherical body a to which a pair of truncated parabolical reflectors c having their lower portions cut away and carrying lenses d are preferably connected so that rays from the light source which is adjustably mounted in the body for focusing purposes may be directed longitudinally of the street. The reflectors are secured to carriers b shaped to conform to the interior of the body a and provided with apertured ears b<1> by means of which they are pivotally secured to the body a by bolts r. The lenses d are secured within the reflectors by a bezel e and carrier plate b. A cap h is mounted over the central opening in the body a on pillars g, and a casing i is secured within the cap by bolts k and is spaced therefrom by washers l so as to leave an annular ventilating opening. The source of light, which may be an electric incandescent lamp or an incandescent gas burner, is supported within the body by a ring m having radially-projecting forked arms which slidably embrace the pillars g. The ring m is raised or lowered for focusing the light source by rotating a ring n which is externally screwed to engage grooves on the lower portions of the pillars g. The ring n is looked against rotation after a setting has been made by bolts q, passing through the ring m and provided with heads which engage under an inturned flange on the ring n. Access to the focusing means is obtained by sliding upwards a casing o surrounding the pillars g swivelling arms p being provided on the latter for retaining the casing o in the raised position. According to the Provisional Specification, the whole or part of the apparatus may be enclosed in a protective transparent shield.
