Abstract

587,884. Vehicle lamps. JOHNSTON, E. R., MERLING, K. B., and STACEY, H. R. Sept. 27, 1943, No. 15847. [Classes 75 (ii) and 75 (iv)] To prevent glare or dazzle from a lamp, the high intensity light beam of the lamp is bordered by a beam of lower intensity, the ratio of the intensities as judged from within the beam'being in the ratio of about 10 to 1 and the ratio of the areas illuminated on the retina being between about 1 to 9 and 1 to 400. In the vehicle head lamp shown, a high intensity parallel or slightly divergent beam is produced by the direct light from a 30 watt electric light bulb 15 having an aperture bordered by a silvered band 16 and reflected light from a parabolic reflector 10 passing through a lens 11, and the lower intensity beam is produced by light reflected by the reflector through a ground glass screen 13 having a central clear portion adjacent the lens 11. The relative diameters of the lens 11 and screen 13 are approximately 3 to 10. Instead of the ground glass screen 13, part of the reflector may be light diffusing or a light diffusing disc or cup may be provided at the back of the bulb 15 either externally or internally.
