Abstract

415,914. Systems of lighting for road vehicles. MILLER, A. L., 29, Hamilton Square, Birkenhead, and HELME, E. T. L., 23, Hamilton Road, Wallasey, both in Cheshire. April 19, 1934, No. 32545/33. [Class 75 (iv).] In a system of lighting for road vehicles an auxiliary lamp comprising a line or multi-point source of light, one or more downwardly directed reflectors, and diffusing means, is mounted on the rear off-side quarter of the vehicle and at such a height as to project an evenly spread fan-shaped beam downwardly and towards the rear and offside of the vehicle. The offside portion of the beam may be of substantially the same intensity as that of the headlights, whilst the rearward portion may be of less intensity and may be projected further along the road than the offside portion. The inclination of the beam to the horizontal may be maintained constant on roads of different cambers by pivotally mounting the auxiliary lamp under the control of a pendulum or other counter-weight. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the auxiliary lamp comprises a casing 16, parabolic half reflectors 17-19, electric lamp bulbs 20-22 connected in parallel, and a vertically fluted cover glass 23. Instead of the latter, the reflectors may be so shaped as to produce the horizontal diffusion of the beam. The casing may be sunk or partially sunk into the body of the vehicle, it may be exposed by moving a shutter when the auxiliary lamp is switched on, and it may be fitted with an emerald signal lens 29. In the form shown in Fig. 7, a parabolic trough-shaped reflector 30 is fitted along its focal line with a linear electric incandescent filament or an electric gaseous discharge tube.
