Abstract

1289776 Vehicle lamps GTE SYLVANIA Inc 9 June 1970 [9 June 1969] 27950/70 Heading F4R A headlamp or spotlamp comprises a light source 1, an optical system such as an ellipsoidal reflector 8 which produces an image of the source, a gate 9 which cut off at least a portion of the image, and a lens 15 which produces a beam of light from the image, the lens having an annular peripheral portion 17 formed with parallel flutes or prisms 16 and a central portion which is free from such flutes or prisms. The central portion produces a parallel main beam whilst light from the peripheral portion is deflected laterally of the main beam. The gate consists of a metal plate 9 having an aperture 10 covered by a glass plate 11, the central portion 13 of the glass plate being clear and the outer portion 12 being frosted to diffuse the edges of the beam. The source 1 is preferably a tungsten-halogen bulb.
