Abstract

Search-lights; vehicle and like lamps ; lantern shutters. -Light, emitted from a source within the lamp casing, is projected in the form of a beam, converging upon a common focal line, the rays crossing within a narrow light - emitting aperture in the casing to produce externally a diverging wedge - shaped beam. In one form, a casing A consists of two sections 3, 4, preferably secured by a snap fastener, and is provided with a narrow oblong aperture 2. A substantially circular cage B, having lugs 5 projecting through the casing for supporting the lamp, carries a parabolic reflector 7 and is provided with two arms 8 having bearing caps 9 for the reception of a crossrod 10, which supports a detachably secured reflector 11 which is a segment of a cone. An axially adjustable electric lamp bulb 14 is arranged to produce a parallel beam, which is projected by the reflector 11 as a wedge-shaped beam, the rays of which cross in the aperture 2. The beam may be modified by inserting various lenses in the aperture. The reflector 11 may be raised or lowered by an arm 17, secured to it or to the cross-rod 10, which is connected to a flexible cable 18 passing through a tube 19 to an operating- lever. A series of shutters 20, pivotally mounted at 21 in a, rectangular plate 22, are connected by a bar 23 to a bell-crank lever 24 pivotally secured to an arm 8 so as to move in unison with the reflector 11, thus permitting only parallel rays to be projected and concealing the light source. The reflector 11 is adjustable with relation to the cross-rod 10 by means of an arm 30 and a setscrew 31. The arm 17 is secured by a pawl 17<a>, the weight of the arm 24 and rod 23 being offset by a spring 40. In another form, the reflector 11 is a surface generated by revolving a parabolic arc, or other curve, and a tangent at one extremity. The light-rays projected from the lower conical portion of the reflector form a wedgeshaped beam and are preferably horizontal or inclined downwardly, while those from the upper paraboloidal or other surface, which also cross in the aperture 2, diverge as a conical or part conical beam. A diaphragm may be located at a distance behind the aperture 2 corresponding to the focal length of the lens in the aperture to define sharply the beam.
