Abstract

183,274. Terry, A. E. April 29, 1921. Lantern gratings.-An anti-dazzle device for attachment to the fronts of vehicular lamps consists of a frame having a plurality of open-ended transverse compartments for controlling the main light-beam, and of such dimensions as to leave an annular or side space between the periphery of the frame and the inner edge of the front of the lamp through which some indirect light-rays are allowed to spread for light-ing up the side of the road. In one form, the frame 1 is made of metal, is circular in shape and cellular in structure, and is supported concentrically inside and against the glass of the lamp by radial arms 3, extending from a split ring 4 which is expansible outwards by means of an adjustment screw 5 to grip the device in position in the lamp. In other forms the transverse compartments are made by a number of short lengths of tube of different diameters arranged concentrically, or a spiral configuration is employed. The arms 3 may be attached by screws or rivets to the lamp-casing, or spring members may be used to hold the device in position.
