Vehicle lamps; lighting, systems of; lantern obturators.-In a vehicle headlight in which a hemispherical reflector is arranged on one side of the light source with its centre at the source and a convergent lens on the other side, the lens 3, Fig. 1, has its lower part 5 cut away to form a dihedral angle with the line of intersection of its bounding surfaces horizontal so that light is directed downwards. The lens 3 may be formed in one with or combined with a piano-cylindrical lens 4 arranged with its axis vertical for spreading the light laterally, and the source of light may consist of a horizontally arranged electric filament 1 or filaments. In one form, the hemispherical reflector 2 is movable about a central axis so that it can be brought between the light source and either the lens 3 or the main parabolic reflector 6 which extends to a focal plane passing through the focus of the light source. The reflector 6 has a non-reflecting extension and the reflector 2 is formed with a central aperture 7. In a second form, the convergent lens 4, Fig. 3, a fixed hemispherical reflector 3, and the light source I are mounted outside the axis of the main reflector of the lamp, a main light source 1<1> being arranged at the focus of the main reflector. The main and auxiliary light sources may be brought into operation alternately, e.g. by means of a switch.
