Abstract

496,885. Light-projectors. RESEARCH CORPORATION. June 7, 1937, No. 15697. Convention date, July 27, 1936. [Classes 75 (ii), 75 (iii), and 75 (iv)] A vehicle lamp, spotlight, or like lightprojector adapted to produce a parallel or convergent beam of light, comprises a source of light F<1>, a refractor L with one or more spherical surfaces, and a concave reflector M the axial portion a-a of which is composed of a plurality of segmental zones a<1>-a<5> with foci f<1>-f<5> which reflect rays to consecutive portions 1-5 of the refractor, the curvature of each zone being such as to compensate for the spherical aberration of the corresponding portion of the refractor, as shown in Fig. 10. The refractor may comprise one or more lenses which may be vertically corrugated, and the light source may be disposed at or behind the principal focal point of the central portion of the refractor. The outer portion of the reflector M may be generated by completely or partially rotating about the axis of the projector a portion a, b, c of an ellipse having foci at F<1> and F<2>, and use may also be made of a spherical recuperating reflector S having its centre of curvature at F<1>, or a diaphragm, to produce a unilateral pattern in the beam. An opening J<1> may be made in the top, side, or rear of the reflector M so as to illuminate a jewel J. In the form shown in Fig. 5, two plano-convex lenses 16, 22 are associated with a reflector M the front portion 25 of which is conical, and the lamp includes a spherical reflector 47 which is cut away at 54, a plane or corrugated colour filter 28, a rearwardly bent diaphragm 29, and a breather comprising a shell 56 containing cotton wadding, glass wool, silk waste, or other dust-filtering material 58. The lamp is fixed in position by means of a clamping bolt engaging a threaded bore 4 in a metal block 2 inside the casing 1, a rubber or like gasket 7 separating the casing 1 from a cup-shaped washer 5 positioned in the opening 3 in the casing. The socket 43 for the electric light bulb 31 is adjusted in a resilient sleeve 49 by means of bolts 45, the sleeve 49 being carried by a ball-shaped block 33 engaging corresponding surfaces on the block 2 and on a thickened portion 38 of the casing 1, and locked in position by a bolt 40 which enters the block 2. Bolts 26 serve to secure the reflector M, the filter 28, the diaphragm 29, and the lens 22 to a sleeve 18 which is secured as at 19 to a sleeve 8 which, together with a sleeve 12, serves to hold the lens 16 in position.
