Abstract

649,063. Railway signals. WESTING - HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., PETER, L. H., SHEPPARD, E. A., and STEVENS, S. A. Aug. 4, 1948, No. 20586. [Class 105] [Also in Groups XI and XXXVIII] A light unit for light signals or indicators comprises two or more sources of light and a single light guide conveying light from the sources by internal reflection and emitting it at the end thereof. The single light guide comprises a rod 1 of transparent material and three tributary rods 5 of similar material formed integral or held detachably in abutting contact with the rod 1. Each of the tributary rods 5 is connected to a lamp housing 6 in each of which a filter 8 colours the light before it enters the associated rod 5 ; reflectors may be employed in the lamp housing to concentrate the light on to the ends of the rods 5. The lamps are controlled in accordance with traffic conditions to supply light of correct colour to the light guide, which light is emitted by the end 3 of the rod 1 remote from the tributary rods 5. This end 3 is positioned at the focus of a concave reflector 9 which directs the diverging rays from the rod into a parallel beam. The end 3 may be shaped as a truncated cone as shown or in the form of a bead ; or it may have facetted surfaces. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the rod 1 passes through a central aperture in the beam forming reflector and the rod end is made bulbous with its tip formed concave and made reflecting to present to the guided light a convex reflecting surface with focus at the focus of the reflector. Instead of using a reflector to form a beam, the light emitted by the rod may be concentrated by a lens system, in which case the rod end is located at the focus of the system ; or alternatively the rod end may itself constitute a lens by being flared in conical manner and having its end surface of lens contour. Fig. 4 shows the invention applied as a indicator signal on a control panel 15. The rod 1 extends through an aperture in the panel and has a domed end positioned to coincide with the appropriate part of a light signal engraved on the panel front. Part of the surface of the light conducting rod may be silvered to prevent loss of light. According to the Provisional Specification two of the filters 8 may be of the same colour, e.g. so that one may act as a standby.
