Abstract

649,370. Reflectors. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., STEVENS, S. A., and SHEPPARD, E. A. Oct. 12, 1948, No. 26553. [Class 75 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] A reflector comprises a transparent plate formed with concentric steps 3 and risers 4, on its rear surface, the risers being radial from the common centre 5 and the steps being internally reflecting to transmit light from the common centre in the form of a parallel beam. The steps 3 are preferably parabolic with a common focus at the centre 5 which lies in the plane of the front surface ; the steps may be conical: An electric bulb 8 which may be covered at its front by a spherical reflector is supported in a spherical recess 7 at the centre of the reflector. Instead of the bulb 8 light may be piped to the centre of the reflector by a light guide the end of which merges into the rear of the reflector; at the centre thereof. In this case the front surface at the reflector centre is shaped concavely spherical and made internally reflecting so as to present a convex spherical reflecting surface with its focus at the common centre 5 to the piped light. A divergent light beam is obtained by arranging the steps so that their focal points do not coincide; or prisms may be moulded on the front surface of the reflector or on a cover glass.
