Abstract

763,376. Vehicle reflectors. HINDS, R. P. H. April 26, 1955 [May 11, 1954], No. 13722/54. Class 75(2) A vehicle lamp comprises a rearwardly facing front reflector in the form of a surface of revolution about the principal axis of the lamp and disposed on the forward :side of a light source on that axis and a forwardly facing reflector having the same focal point as the front reflector and throwing forward in a parallel beam light received from the front reflector, either below the front reflector or through an aperture therein. As shown in Fig. 2, the front reflector 7 of parabolic form receives a parallel beam of light reflected from a parabolic mirror 1 whose focus is at the source 2 of light the mirror 7 redirecting the beam through its focus 8 to be again reflected at a parabolic or spherical concave or convex mirror 9 or 10 of short focal length relative to the focal length of the mirror 7 and disposed with its focus at the focus 3 of mirror 7 so that a parallel beam passes through a central aperture in the mirror 7. The central portion 6 of mirror 1 is non-reflecting. The upper half only of mirror 7 may be used, dispensing with the mirror 9, 10 and disposing mirror 1 with its focus coinciding with the focus of mirror 7 at the light source. Alternatively the semicircular parabolic mirror 9 directs the final beam beneath the semi-circular parabolic mirror 7. The front mirror 7 may be an ellipsoid 11, Fig. 3, with the light source 2 at the front focus of the ellipsoid and with the mirror 9 or 10 disposed with its focus at the rear focus 8 of the elliosoid, the final parallel beam being directed..through a central aperture in the front mirror 11. Alternatively the mirror 9 or 10 may be replaced by a plane mirror located on the minor axial plane of the ellipsoid, the final parallel beam being directed through an aperture in the plane mirror from a spherical mirror at the apex of the ellipsoid. In another alternative, two mirrors such as 7 and 9 or 10 may be disposed with the common focus at such point on the major axis of the ellipsoid as to direct the final parallel beam through the central aperture in the mirror 7, the central apical portion of the ellipsoidal mirror being then made non-reflecting.
