966,357. Aircraft runway lights. CANADIAN PATENTS & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. March 13, 1963 [April 30, 1962], No. 9990/63. Heading F4R. A marker light for aircraft runways comprises a housing 15 having an upper wall 11 formed in part by a glass plate 12 whose upper surface is generally flat and whose under surface is formed with a series of transverse grooves 13 having flat faces lying on planes inclined at angles between 25 and 65 degrees to the plane of the upper surface, or light source 20 mounted inside the housing and optical focusing means, e.g. cylindrical lenses 19 and parabolic reflectors 17, 18 for directing the light in generally parallel rays normal to the faces of the grooves 13, the rays being refracted at the upper surface of the plate to a small angle with the surface of the runway. The light is mounted centrally of and flush with the runway surface. The light source 20 is a line source and is held on clips 21 in the housing. The lenses 19 may also be curved at right angles to the axis of the cylinder to concentrate the light. The upper surface of the plate 12 may also have shallow grooves of very small angle. The device may use a single lens and a single mirror with a curved surface to produce a single beam of light.
