Abstract

759,847. Runway lights. HOLOPHANE, Ltd., and HOLMES, J. G. March 16, 1954 [Dec. 19, 1932; Jan. 8, 1953], Nos. 32325/52 and 647/53. Classes 75(2) and 75(4). A lighting fitting for use in a runway surface to project only a short distance therefrom and to produce a high intensity beam of light of narrow vertical angle at a small angle above the horizontal comprises a prism or solid of revolution of solid transparent material into which light enters from below, at least a portion of one of the principal faces of the prism or solid of revolution acting as a reflector and optical means being provided to concentrate the light into a narrow angle beam before or during its passage through the prism or solid of revolution. The axial section of the prism or solid of revolution may be triangular, truncated triangular (as shown) or truncated square. In the embodiment shown two beams 9 from a parabolic reflector 37 and a light source 36 enter the base 7 of the prism normally and are reflected by the lower portions of the side surfaces of the prism towards the upper portions of the opposite side surfaces where they emerge after refraction in opposite directions. The beams may be directed at an angle to the base to cause refraction. The lower and upper reflecting portions of the side surfaces may be curved to obtain parallel beams from divergent entering beams or they may be straight with the lower reflecting portion of each side inclined to its own upper emergent portion. The entering beams may be tilted in the longitudinal plane of the prism to provide two emergent beams at an angle differing from 180 degrees in azimuth. The .exposed surfaces of the prism may be vertically fluted and the reflecting surfaces may be metallised. The prism may be formed in short pieces placed end to end. A transparent dome may cover the prism and may redirect the beams. The beams may be coloured by filters 35 and may be separately controlled by shutters. The prism is retained in a recess in a cast metal mounting 31 by a cast metal member 32 and the reflector is held in a housing 38 secured to the mounting 31. The fitting is secured by bolts 40 to a ground box. Specification 759,848 is referred to.
