Abstract

862,073. Systems of lighting. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 26, 1959 [Oct. 27, 1958], No. 34377/58. Class 75 (4). A system for lighting spaced compartments which have at least one area through which light can be transmitted. comprises a light source with optical means, such as a parabolic mirror 13, for directing the light from the source in a beam passing through or near the area or areas of each compartment, and light abstracting means for each compartment arranged to direct light from the beam into the compartment. A light interceptor 16, having a central aperture 17 and fitted to the ceiling of each landing 11 of a staircase 10 directs part of the beam on to each landing. The size of the aperture may decrease towards the top of the staircase. The surface of the interceptor 16<SP>1</SP> may be slightly convex. The - light beam may be directed downwards: For compartments in a row on the same level, an interceptor at the same or at increasing height above each compartment deflects light into each compartment. If the compartments are not in one-row reflectors may deflect the beam along a zig-zag path or a separate beam may provide light for each row. The ratio of transmitted and reflected light of the interceptor varies with the material used which may be opal acrylic sheet.
