Abstract

730,227. Airport runway lights. REVO ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Feb. 23, 1954 [Nov. 29, 1952], No. 30294/52. Classes 75 (2) and 75 (4). A directional lighting unit for an aircraft runway comprises a lamp and reflector located in a casing so as to direct upwardly at a small angle to the vertical a beam of light through a transparent armoured or toughened prism mounted in the top cover of the casing, the upper surface of which prism is arranged substantially co-planar with or slightly, inclined to the surface of the runway. Two electric lamps a, b are mounted in a casing c each in association with a parabolic reflector b inclined so as to direct a beam of rays through a prism d the upper surface of which is slightly proud of a cover plate e aligned with the runway surface. The prism d is substantially rectangular in plan and has two inclined faces d<SP>2</SP> through which the light beams are directed to leave the prism along the directions d<SP>1</SP> slightly inclined to the horizontal. A resilient moulding f, e.g. of rubber, receives the periphery of the prism which is held by clamping the plate e to a lower plate el by bolts g. The casing c is secured to the plate e<SP>1</SP> by bolts g, and bolts h secure the plate e<SP>1</SP> to the aircraft runway. A series of lighting units is arranged along or closely parallel to the longitudinal centre line of the runway. According to the Provisional Specification the upper or lower surface of the prism of each unit may be formed with flutes which may be aligned with the longitudinal direction of the runway to provide greater lateral spread of the emitted light, and each unit comprises one electric lamp only.
