Abstract

911,984. Street lighting fittings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 21, 1961 [July 22, 1960], No. 25601/60. Class 75 (2). An electric light fitting especially for street lighting, in which one or more lamps are supported in an enclosure formed in part by a light transmitting bowl and light directing elements are provided to deviate the light into opposed directions of peak intensity, the bowl has a shallow or flat bottom carrying refractory elements to deviate the light from above mainly on to opposed directions transverse to the directions of peak intensity. The bowl may be frustum shaped with a part-spherical bottom. The sides 1 of the bowl are covered by refractory prisms 5 directing light mainly into pairs of beams 6, 7 and 8, 9 extending up and down the roadway, one member of each pair illuminating the pavement and house fronts and the other the road surface. The bottom of the bowl is part-spherical and is covered with prisms 10 lying along the great circles of the sphere with their length up and down the roadway. These prisms may be of the cross-refractory type and may be spaced apart to provide some downward illumination.
