Abstract

710,608. Runway lighting. KNOTTNERUS, L. F. A. June 27, 1952 [March 13, 1952], No. 16165/52. Class 75 (4) An aircraft runway light comprises a concrete or like paving block 1 the upper surface of which has one or more longitudinal slots or recesses 2 housing at least one light source 4 so arranged wholly or partly below the runway surface in which the block is built as to radiate light in the longitudinal direction of the runway. As shown the upper surface of the block slopes upwardly towards its centre 3 and the bases of the recesses 2 slope downwardly towards the block centre, and incandescent filament lamps 4 are housed in the deep ends of the recesses in front of a parabolic reflector 5, or where two or more lamps 4 are used, mirrors 10, 11. A window 7 is provided in front of each lamp and drainage ducts 8, 9 are provided at the deep ends of the recesses. The lamps may be low voltage type and the centre part 3 of the block may house a transformer 6, and a lamp 12 with a window 13 above. The width of the recesses 2 must be less than the width of an aircraft landing wheel or must be partitioned longitudinally by concrete, or steel, girders 14 into sections of such sufficiently narrow width, the upper face of the partitions being flush with the upper surface of the block.
