In a system of lighting for aircraft runways, a plurality of light sources 3 are arranged at or near the ground on the boundaries of the runway to cast their beams solely in the general direction of travel of a landing aircraft. The lamps may also be provided on the threshold of the runway and the usual boundary marking lights 2 may also be provided. The lamps 3 may be of the type in which the beam can be switched from one direction to the opposite direction to provide for aircraft landing in either direction.
