713,115. Lanterns. CROMPTON PARKINSON, Ltd., and HOLOPHANE, Ltd. Dec. 4, 1952 [Jan. 3, 1952], No. 269/52. Class 75 (4) An electric lantern particularly for street lighting has an optical system disposed on one or both sides of a light source 1 and comprising an upper prismatic plate 4 refracting light in a downward direction and a lower reflector 5 directing light downwardly through the bottom of the lantern, the reflector lying not farther from the vertical axis through the source than the refractor. The refractor and reflector may be parallel or in a straight line as shown or at an angle to one another or they may form a continuous curve. The reflector may be made of silvered or prismatic glass or plastic or polished metal. The end portions of the reflector and/or refractor may have vertical or oblique prisms. The refractor and reflector are preferably made in a single piece and are covered by a transparent plate 7. A screen 10 is fitted above the refractor to cut-off light emerging above an angle near the horizontal. The top of the lantern consists of a cover plate 2 formed with a socket 3 for a support and the bottom of the lantern is either open or covered with clear or translucent material. One or more reflectors may be placed above the source. The lantern may be elongated, the ends being opaque or translucent and the source being elongated or the lantern may be circular or elliptical in plan.
