Abstract
815,609. Street lighting luminaires. CORNING GLASS WORKS. April 20, 1956 [April 26, 1955], No. 12198/56. Classes 75(2) and 75(4) A luminaire, especially for street lighting, comprises a downwardly acting eggshaped reflector with the mouth substantially below the light source and oriented with its long axis transverse to the street, having a generally parabolic contour in planes inclined at 75 degrees to the nadir and asymmetrical in vertical planes parallel to the axis of the parabola, and a refractor fitted over the mouth of the reflector having banks of parallel prisms A, B, C, D, Fig. 3, with their axes vertical in the upper regions and progressively indined to the vertical in the lower regions, the prisms in each bank being substantially of equal refracting power and those in the lower banks being so inclined to the vertical as to elevate the rays into substantial parallelism with the rays transmitted by the upper part of the refractor. The prisms may have compound faces as shown in Fig. 8 so that divergence is obtained while retaining the sharp-cut off characteristics of the prisms. The reflector may have a continuously changing radius of curvature in vertical planes parallel to the axis of the parabola.
