Abstract

569,552. Luminairs. HOLOPHANE, Ltd., (Holophane Co., Inc.). May 16, 1944, No. 9362. [Classes 75 (ii) and 75 (iv)] A luminair for lighting long narrow areas such as the' aisles of vehicles, s, corridors, cargo spaces of aeroplanes, &c., comprises a reflector 21 fitted with an incandescent lamp 26 having a substantially flat lens plate 24 held close to the lamp by a ring 25, the lower surface of the plate 24 being formed with annular prisms 29, 31 for bending all the rays from the light source 23 generally parallel to the rays passing through an annular flat portion 28 and the upper surface being formed with parallel prisms 40 extending transversely to the aisle for elevating the rays emerging lengthwise of the aisle so that the regions illuminated by adjacent luminairs spaced along the aisle at a distance substantially equal to the width of the area will overlap. The upper surface of the plate may also be formed with a rosette of radial diffusing flutes 39 to prevent an excessively bright spot immediately below the luminair. The maximum elevation of the rays in directions transverse and longitudinal to the aisle may be 35 and 50‹ from the nadir respectively.
