Abstract

1407409 Scanning a surface FERRANTI Ltd 26 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 49885/71 Addition to 1376135 Heading G1A In a modification of the surface scanning station disclosed in Specification 1376135 the light spot Fig.3a (not shown) scanning the moving surface is elongated to a light bar Fig. 3c (not shown) by utilising an optical arrangement having different focal lengths in two orthogonal planes. The optical system Fig. 4 may comprise two positive spherical lenses 13 and 14 and a negative cylindrical lens 15. The negative cylindrical lens 15 alters (lengthens) the focal length of the system in one plane (parallel to the drawing) so that radiation from the laser 1 travelling in one plane (perpendicular to the drawing) is brought to focus on the surface 6 whilst radiation travelling in an orthogonal plane is brought to focus at 19 behind the surface thereby forming a light bar 20 on the surface, thus enabling the scanning system to operate more effectively with surfaces travelling at high speeds. An alternative optical system Fig. 4c (not shown) employing a positive cylindrical lens instead of the negative lens 15 is disclosed.
