Abstract

1376135 Scanning a web FERRANTI Ltd 18 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971] 5528/71 Heading G1A In a scanning station for detecting blemishes in a surface 11, a beam from a laser 1 is made to scan the surface by a lens system 8, a positionally adjustable right angled mirrored prism 7 and elongated cylindrical lens 16. The intensity of the light that has been reflected off the surface is measured by a photo-multiplier 2 with the aid of a plane mirror 6 and the reflective surfaces on the inside of the station. The reflective inside walls may take several forms, that is, parallel opposed reflecting surfaces Fig.9 (not shown), or parallel opposed reflecting surfaces whose ends near the moving surface are made to taper inwardly slightly or curve inwards slightly. The elongated cylindrical lens may be plano-convex, bi-convex, or circular in cross-section and the effect of dust or marks on the lens may be eliminated by utilizing electric circuitry incorporating memories. In a second embodiment, Fig.1 (not shown), lens 16 is omitted.
