Abstract
1328877 Inspecting a surface ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 9 Oct 1970 [27 Oct 1969] 48078/70 Heading G1A A device for inspecting an internal surface 32, Fig.1, comprises a light source 10 providing a light beam to pass through holes in a mirror 14 and a lens 29 so as to be reflected off a further mirror 28, attached to an axially movable probe 22, on to the surface to be inspected; part of the light reflected from the surface then travelling back as shown to be received by a photosensitive element 42. The lens 29 and mirror 28 are housed in a tube 22 which is rotated so as to scan the surface. Known irregularities such as screw holes in the surface can be "gated out" of the signal from the photo-sensitive element 42 by the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, the outside of the tube 22 having an area of light absorbing material corresponding to the presence of each known irregularity, such that a further photoelectric element 56 will be able to provide a signal every time there is a known irregularity present. The signals from the photo-sensitive elements 42 and 56 can be subtracted from one another Fig. 5 (not shown) to provide a signal which indicates only unknown irregularities and flaws.
