Abstract

1281888 Measuring areas photo-electrically KENT INSTRUMENTS Ltd 13 Oct 1969 [13 Sept 1968] 43749/68 Heading G1A The areas under a closed curve are measured by providing apparatus which can detect a difference in radiation at the boundaries of the curve so that when the areas are scanned an output representative of the distance between the differences can be summed to give a measure of each area. The area 10, which may be a record curve from chromatograph apparatus, is mounted in holder 28 and scanned by a beam of light from lamps 22 which is reflected on to the chart by rotating mirrors 26. Behind the chart are photo-cells 36 which detect the change in intensity of the transmitted light when it passes over the boundary lines of the curve. These changes operate respective ones of triggers 40 to on and off respectively so that during the on period the signal is integrated at 42. Synchronized with the rotation of mirrors 26 is a displacement device which moves the record 28 vertically one step for each sweep of light so that the whole area is scanned in parallel strips. Signals representative of the length of each strip are added in integrator 42 and presented on readout device 44. The signals may be analogue or pulses. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) the light source itself is rotated and the record again moved in steps perpendicular to the light beam. In this example a pair of photo-detectors is used to detect the change in the diffusing reflective property of the surface at the curve boundaries which are drawn using different coloured inks. Various alterations can be made in the construction of both embodiments to provide the scanning action. In a further embodiment the record may be placed adjacent the face of a cathode ray tube whose light spot is used as the source. A normal raster scan may be used or alternatively the record can be moved vertically and the spot scanned horizontally, Figs.4 and 5 (not shown).
