Abstract
1,271,990. Measuring strip width. CENTRE NATIONAL DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES. April 23, 1969 [April 26, 1968], No.20672/69. Headings G1A and G1M. A product 1 such as hot rolled strip whose width 'W' is to be measured is observed by fixed but adjustable optical sighting devices 4, 5, which receive rays emitted from or reflected by 1 and reflect them by means of mirrors 10, 11, lenses 12, 13 and prism 14 on to the surface of a television camera 15. Thus a ray 16 corresponding to one edge 17 will be represented on 15 by a line 17<SP>1</SP>, and similarly for the edge 21 of the product there is a second line 21<SP>1</SP> so that the lighter area 19 corresponds to the visible part of the product viewed from device 5 and the darker area 20 corresponds to the support 3. The distance between the lines 17' and 21<SP>1</SP> is related to the width of the product and may be measured by timing electronic scanning between them and calculating the width by means 24. A line 18 parallel to and directly below the prism 14 will appear on the screen as two spaced apart lines 18<SP>1</SP> and 18<SP>11</SP> and these may be made to coincide with the edges of the scanner. If the product is obliquely placed relative to the devices 4, 5 then the screen 15 gives an image as in Fig. 3, so that the width 'W' may be calculated, from the known distance between scanning lines 25 and 26 and by determining the distances l, m, and n, by measuring the time taken to scan along the lines 29, 30, 31.
