Abstract

787,385. Gauging by optical projection. EXATEST GES. FUR MESSTECHNIK. March 23, 1954, No. 8515/54. Class 106 (2). For measuring the width of strip material, especially continuously moving strip, the image of each strip edge a, b is projected optically on to a ground glass screen 5, or the field of vision of a measuring telescope, in such manner that the images a<SP>1</SP>, bl intersect substantially normally. So long as the strip width is constant the point of intersection remains on a line 7 at 45 degrees to the images despite any lateral movement of the strip as a whole. If the strip width varies, the point of intersection will lie on a line 8 parallel to the line 7, the spacing between the lines 7, 8 forming a measure of the deviation. The screen 5 may therefore be graduated by lines at 45 degrees. The image of the edge a is turned through 90 degrees by prisms 2 and projected through a semi-transparent.mirror 3 and lens assembly 4, while the image of the edge b is projected through the mirror 3 and lenses 4 so that it appears horizontal, the paths being equalized by prism assembly 6. The mirror and lenses are adjustable for different widths of strip.
