Abstract
225,075. Mersing, J. Dec. 12, 1923. Ceiling and like overhead lamps; mounting electric lamps in lanterns.- Relates to an overhead incandescent electric lamp in which a globe is carried bv a hood and is so constructed as to exclude all direct light, some of the rays being reflected, the remainder being transmitted through translucent elements, and consists in means for (1) pivotally connecting together the upper and lower parts of the globe, (2) clamping the upper part of the globe to the hood, and (3) mounting the electric lamp bulb or bulbs so as to be vertically adjustable. Metal rings 4, 6 are secured by means of resilient tongues to beaded flanges formed on the upper and lower parts of the globe respectively, and the ring 6 is pivotally connected to the ring 4 bv means of a hinge 7 and one or more screw clamps 8. The ring 4 is provided with gauzecovered ventilating-apertures 13 and may also be used for exhibiting illuminated signs. A conical reflecting-surface 2<a> is formed either on the opaque or translucent bell-shaped upper part 2 of the globe so as to reflect horizontally emitted light rays downwardly through a transparent portion 3 of the lower part of the globe, or else on the lower part of the globe so as to reflect horizontally emitted light rays upwardly through a transparent upper part of the globe either on to the ceiling or on to another reflector connected to the hood 1. When the central portion 3 of the lower part of the. globe is made transparent the lower portion of the electric lamp bulb 5 is frosted. The upper part 2 of the globe is clamped between a conical rim 17 on the hood 1 and a conical rim 23 on a ring 14 which is provided in its upper cylindrical portion 20 with inclined and preferably serrated slots 25 for engaging with radially adjustable screws 19 held in bosses 18 formed on the upper cylindrical portion 15 of the hood. The flange 22 at the upper edge of the ring 14 is provided with notches 26 for passing over the bosses 18 and lugs 24 on the bottom of the ring enable it to be rotated when securing the globe in position. The hood 1 is also provided with gauze-covered ventilating apertures 27. The holder 30 of the electric lamp bulb 5 is secured to a bridge piece 29 which is sprung on to and slidable upon the vertical limbs of a shackle 28 suspended from the top of the hood 1. Alternatively two electric lamp bulbs connected in series may be adjustably mounted on the two members of a yoke secured to the bridge piece 29.
